Novel Food (Novel foods and food ingredients)
Description
The rules for authorising novel foods and food ingredients are harmonised at European level. Before they are placed on the market, tests carried out by the European Food Safety Authority must demonstrate that these products do not pose any risk to health or the environment. Data is collected for risk assessment, risk management and includes requests for authorisation for novel food substances and the subsequent publication of lists of authorised novel foods. A food is to be considered as novel when a production technology which was not previously used for food production in the Union is applied to that food.
