A river basin district is the area of land and sea consisting of one or more adjacent river basins with their respective groundwater, transitional and coastal waters. The RBD is the main river basin management unit. Two river basin districts are defined in the territory of the Republic of Croatia: the Danube RBD and the Adriatic RBD. The boundaries of the river basin districts are established by the Government of the Republic of Croatia.
The Danube RBD encompasses the part of the Croatian mainland from which all waters flow through surface or underground to the Danube River.
The Adriatic RBD comprises a part of the mainland of the Republic of Croatia, including islands, from which all waters flow, either by surface or underground, into the Adriatic Sea, associated transitional waters, and coastal waters solely in terms of their chemical and ecological status.
