Overview of former country estates within the municipality of Utrecht
By a country estate we mean a coherent whole of main building, greenery and outbuildings. Sometimes extensive agricultural lands were also part of the properties. These have not been taken into account in the map.
The country estate map contains information about former country estates in Utrecht. Some country estates have completely disappeared, others are still remnants of home and / or garden present. In some cases, the country estate has been preserved quite intact or the coherence between house and garden has been restored.
Not all estates are easy to locate. Sometimes the exact location is unknown or the boundaries are uncertain. In addition, country estates are changeable. They develop over time in function, form and size. In short: It is not always possible to determine with certainty what the boundaries of a country estate were. When clicking on a country estate on the map, it is stated how (un)certain the boundaries are.
Outdoor spaces come in different forms. The classic ‘outdoor’ is the summer residence of a well-to-do family. There are also estates that arose at companies or factories – these often had to propagate the success of the company (e.g.: House Precaution, Rocky place, Silk bales). Utrecht also had a number of luxury inns with associated tea gardens, which later grew into a country estate (e.g.: The Origin, Den Hommel, Rhijnlust). Finally, there are the successful farms or gardeners, whose residential building with surrounding garden grew into country estate proportions (e.g.: Jaffa, Marksland, Minsweerd, the Minstroom).
Many country estates are located on important waterways or arteries of the city, such as the Vecht, the Krommerijn, the Leidsche Rijn, the Vaartsche Rijn and the Biltstraat/Biltsestraatweg (e.g.: Eye in Al, Welgelegen, Roosendaal, Gildestein, Bloeiendaal, etc.). These places were easily accessible – an important condition for a place for leisure, temporary habitation or the reception of guests, and also important for the supply and disposal lines of successful companies. Also popular for the construction of country estates were former monastery grounds (e.g.: Daelwijck, Oudwijk, Hof ter Weyde, Chartreuse) and medieval courtyards or delicacies (e.g.: House in Voorn, House in Veen, Rhijnauwen, the Hogeland, Soestbergen). In addition, the Maliebaan and the areas just outside the city walls were attractive places for country estates (e.g.: The Park, Nieuweroord, Raadwijk)
