Campaign: FLEMISH CAP 2019
Description
The objective of the campaign is to know the status of the populations of the target species: their abundance, biomass and demographic structure, and oceanographic conditions at the Bank. This objective involves the following actions: • Prospect the area of Flemish Cap, NAFO Division 3M to depths of 1460 m (800 fathoms) by stratified random sampling, making 181 trawls1 with a Lofoten gear, daytime: between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. and an effective trawling duration of 30 minutes. • Perform in each fishery a detailed biological sampling of the catch for each of the target species, including samplings of size, sex, weight, otoliths and gonads. For other species only size sampling and size-weight sampling shall be carried out. • Analysis of the stomach contents of the main species caught, to be carried out every two years2. • Identification and recording of all invertebrate species present in the catches. • Record oceanographic conditions on the bench by doing CTD stations to cover a lattice 15 miles apart, both in longitude and latitude. • Collaborate in the tasks carried out on board, for the iSeas project, which aims, through image monitoring, to quantify the catches of the most important species.
