20 The study of earthquake patterns beneath Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands suggests that parts of two downbent oceanic plates are sliding and interacting beneath the islands. This results in the tilting of overlying microplates, causing massive seafloor landslides. In order to gain understanding of the forces generating earthquaques, seafloor landslides, and tsunamis in the Puerto Rico area. The PRICO-97 cruise collect multichannel seismic profiles, multibeam and singlebeam echosounder profiles, magnetic and gravimetric data.
