Description
A natural area of ecological, faunistic and floristic interest, abbreviated by the acronym ZNIEFF, is an inventoried natural space due to its remarkable character.
The ZNIEFF inventory is a naturalistic and scientific inventory programme launched in 1982 by the Ministry responsible for the environment and confirmed by the Law of 12 July 1983.
A ZNIEFF is not a regulatory protection measure such as listed or listed sites, but an inventory. The inventory programme identifies the remarkable natural areas of land in the 13 metropolitan regions and the overseas departments. The designation of a ZNIEFF is based primarily on the presence of species or associations of species of high heritage interest. The presence of at least one population of a determining species makes it possible to define a ZNIEFF.
It is one of the bases for prioritising natural heritage issues, the National Biodiversity Strategy, the Regional Biodiversity Strategies, SCAPs (National Strategy for the Creation of Protected Areas), etc. It is used in particular for impact assessments and environmental assessment
Type II ZNIEFFs are generally important geographical ensembles, often including several Type I ZNIEFFs, and which designate an extended natural set whose general balances must be preserved. This concept of equilibrium does not, therefore, preclude a type II area from being subject to certain developments, subject to respect for general ecosystems.
