The European Directive on the assessment and management of ambient noise (25/06/02) aims to:
Mapping noise on a large scale
Making the public aware
Develop Environmental Noise Prevention Plans (EPPPs)
The purpose of strategic noise maps is to assess noise exposure and raise public awareness of the health effects of noise.
The noise sources concerned are:
Land transport (roads, railways)
The main industrial activities (ICPE-A)
Strategic noise maps have limits on their use: they are non-enforceable disclosure documents with approximations
Compulsory update every 5 years
The night-time road threshold exceedance data relate to:
areas with an excessive average noise level due to road traffic between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.
