**History of administration:**
Media and audiovisual policy has long been the responsibility of the Minister of State. Following the development of the audiovisual cluster in Luxembourg and in order to promote its expansion, the Media and Audiovisual Service was created under Article 29 of the amended Law of 27 July 1991 on electronic media.
In 1999, the powers of the former Minister of Communications were conferred on the Minister of State (with the exception of those relating to the Postal and Telecommunications Company and the State Computer Centre), which led to the change – initially informal and then officially implemented in 2008 – of the name of the service to the Media and Communications Service.
In June 2014, the Governing Council adopted the ‘Digital Lëtzebuerg’ strategy, an initiative and cross-cutting political priority aimed at strengthening and consolidating, over time, the country’s position in the field of information and communication technologies, coordinated by the MSC.
**Principal missions:**
The MSC supports the development of new communications and media technologies. It is committed to media and information pluralism, high-performance technological connectivity and forward-looking policies while putting people first. It thus accompanies the development of new communications and media technologies. The MSC's remit today is in the areas of media, electronic communications, quantum communications, artificial intelligence, radio frequencies, data policy, data protection and postal services.
