Description

**History of administration:**
The need to create a river navigation service emerged in the 1960s as infrastructure developed on the Moselle.
Indeed, Luxembourg, in partnership with its German and French neighbors, increases the anchorage of the Moselle allowing the operation of 1500 tons boats and convoys with a unit capacity of up to 3500 tons. These developments thus give importance to the Moselle among the European routes of communication.
Work on the anchorage was completed on 26 May 1964 and was followed by the commissioning of the Mertert river port in 1966. The construction of the port then enhances the connection of the Mosellan basin to the network of European waterways while benefiting from the liberal Rhine regime. This regime grants ships of all nations free passage to the seaports of the Rhine-Scaldeo-Mosan basin. The port of Mertert therefore links the economy of Luxembourg and its neighbours to the inland waterway network of northern Europe. The legislator then decides to entrust the management of this infrastructural heritage to a new dedicated service. The Inland Navigation Service was thus created by the Act of 28 July 1973 within the Ministry of Transport.
**Main missions:**
The NFC is responsible for ensuring all the sovereign measures necessary to ensure compliance, continuity and operational security. It shall also ensure that all measures relating to the safeguarding and enhancement of the dependencies of the public waterway domain are carried out. These actions shall be carried out in harmony with the interests of transport, river hydraulics, leisure and hydroelectric power generation while respecting ecological aspects, spatial planning and the protection of sites and monuments.
In practical terms, the SNF’s mission is to manage waterways and monitor their state on the Moselle border section and on the Sûre inland route.
