**History of administration:**
In the absence of significant documentation or scientific study gathering the main historical data of the Ministry of Justice, the writing of its history remains to be done. A research project, carried out in particular by the Ministry of Justice and the Luxembourg Centre for
Contemporary and Digital History (C2DH), is ongoing but does not address the Department of Justice itself. It aims to explore more than 200 years of the history of justice in the Grand Duchy. Therefore, the history of the Ministry is not presented in the Agreement.
**Principal missions:**
The tasks of the Ministry of Justice are defined by the Grand-Ducal Decree of 28 May 2019 establishing the Ministries. In particular, it shall be responsible for:
- A legislative task: In particular, it prepares the texts of laws and regulations in civil law, criminal law and commercial law as well as in relation to legal professions.
- Tasks in a judicial context: requests for compensation, applications for pardon, review of criminal trials, general coordination and representation of the State before the courts and the Constitutional Court
- Services to third parties:applications relating to Luxembourg nationality, changes in surnames, forenames, gender, applications for weapons licences, authorisation to operate security companies, home fund-raising, games of chance, applications for recognition of the public interest of non-profit-making associations, etc.
- Relations with the legal professions and judicial assistants: additional training for lawyers and bailiffs, additional courses in Luxembourg law, judicial and notarial traineeships, preparation of appointment orders for magistrates, bailiffs and notaries, appointment of sworn experts, translators and interpreters, accreditation of justice facilitators and mediators in criminal, civil and commercial matters
- International: The Ministry of Justice is involved in many international councils, commissions and working groups
