Administration history:_
The constitution of a true public archive is required by the law of 5 brumaire of the year V (26/10/1796) by which the French Administration creates the Archives of the Department of Forests and orders the "meeting in all the heads-places of department, of all titles and papers acquired from the Republic".
The archives of the abolished institutions of the Ancien Régime (Provincial and Sovereign Council, States, abbeys, seigneuries, etc.) are thus gathered at the Hôtel de la Préfecture, the current Grand-Ducal Palace. The purpose is to sort these documents on this site to obtain information, primarily administrative and economic, on national areas. The use of the archives for historical purposes is then secondary.
It was only with the Royal Decree of 23 December 1827, requesting the local authorities to discover and examine the historical documents relating to the Netherlands, with a view to writing the history of the Grand Ducal territory, that the historical value of the archives began to assert itself.
Public access to the archives, long reserved only for administrations, is authorized by the Regulation of the Minister of the Interior of the Kingdom of the Netherlands dated 4 August 1829.
These regulations were published in Luxembourg on 16 September 1829 by Governor Willmar.
In 1840, the provincial archives were promoted to the Archives of the Grand-Ducal Government.
The Law of 5 December 1958 confers for the first time a specific legal basis on the Archives, now known as the ‘State Archives’.
Renamed ‘National Archives’ in 1988, they would also be given the status of ‘cultural institute’ at that time.
**Principal missions:**
The tasks of LNAs shall consist of:
- The collection, preservation, classification, inventorying, study and communication of documents of national historical, scientific, economic, societal and cultural interest;
- Advice to producers or holders of archives, public or private, on all matters relating to the classification, inventorying and preservation of their archives;
- Supervising and drawing up recommendations on how to organise, manage, preserve and transfer public archives to the National Archives;
- The acquisition of private archives by donation, bequest or deposit with a view to their integration or deposit in the National Archives and the acquisition for the benefit of the State of private archives of historical, scientific, economic, societal or cultural interest;
- The protection and preservation of public and private archives classified in accordance with the law of 17 August 2018 on archiving;
- The organisation of temporary exhibitions, colloquiums, conferences and educational activities in connection with the activities of LNAux, with the aim of promoting the national archival heritage and raising public awareness of the importance of conserving this heritage;
- Raising the awareness of institutions, administrations and public services about archiving techniques and the preservation of documents of national historical, scientific, economic, societal and cultural interest;
- The contribution to the development of archiving at national and international level.
- Undertake research activities.
