The Statistical Office was established in 1923, succeeding the Standing Committee on Statistics set up at the beginning of the 20th century. The Office for General Statistics took over by the Grand-Ducal Decree of 2 August 1945. It is responsible for carrying out all the statistical work necessary to inform the public authorities, in particular on the demographic, economic and societal situation of the country. It has the power to centralize all information statistics and a power to authorise general surveys. An economic studies and documentation service was also set up in 1945. Its task is to study problems relating to the structure and organisation of the country’s economy and, more specifically, issues of guidance and rehabilitation. Following the merger of the Office for General Statistics and the Economic Studies and Documentation Service, the Central Statistical and Economic Studies Service, more commonly known as STATEC, was founded in 1962. Its tasks are supplemented and specified by the Law of 14 July 1971 on reorganization the Central Service for Statistics and Economic Studies. It is only through the Act of 10 July 2011 that STATEC defines its current tasks and becomes the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies. **Principal missions:** - Establish a statistical information system accessible to the public, in particular on the structure and activity of the country by carrying out surveys or using administrative files to compile statistics on demographic, economic, social and environmental phenomena and by centralising the statistical data available to public bodies by virtue of their powers - Establish national, global or sectoral accounts - Establishing, together with the Banque centrale du Luxembourg, the balance of payments and the financial accounts and ensure their methodological consistency in accordance with European and international rules - Establish and manage a "Balance Sheet" consisting of data from the annual accounts of companies and publish their information - Carry out population, housing and building censuses - To carry out studies and analyses in the field of statistical methodology and statistical procedures and to publish the results thereof - Gather general documentation on statistics, demographic, economic and social theories and facts - Represent Luxembourg as a national statistical authority vis-à-vis foreign, Community and international statistical authorities. **Regulatory references:** - Amended Law of 10 July 2011 on the organisation of the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies **Versions and updates:** The following shall be published in the dataset: La première version signée le 29/07/2020
