Its value requires proper management to ensure its quantity, quality and sustainability. To this end, environmental matters relating to water are initially managed within the Water Division of the Institute of Hygiene and Public Health, which later became the Environment Administration. These responsibilities were then integrated into the Water and Forestry Administration, now the Nature and Forestry Administration. It was subsequently decided by the Government to bring together all the powers relating to water management into one administration. The Water Management Administration, under the Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Sustainable Development, was set up by the amended Law of 28 May 2004. The EGA is then responsible for all aspects related to the integrated and sustainable management of water resources and the aquatic environment and must ensure their effective protection.
