The Sacramento Valley Groundwater-Surface Water Simulation Model (SVSim) Version 1.0 is a calibrated numerical model that simulates water movement through the land surface and the surface water and groundwater flow systems in California’s Sacramento Valley using the DWR-developed software Integrated Water Flow Model Version 2015 (IWFM-2015). SVSim has a finite element grid with over 23,000 elements. Model input data are spatially and temporally distributed, based on available data. The model elements are grouped into nine (9) water budget subregions for estimating regional water budgets. SVSim contains monthly historical stream inflows, surface water diversions, precipitation, evapotranspiration, and land-use acreages from October 1973 through September 2015. (Data are available for 1922 through 2015 for some input files.) SVSim dynamically calculates crop water demands, allocates contributions from precipitation, soil moisture and surface water diversions, and calculates the groundwater pumping required to meet the remaining demand. It simulates the historical response of the Sacramento Valley’s groundwater and surface water flow system to historical stresses and can also be used to simulate the response to projected stresses. The model has a typical run-time of approximately 3 hours.
SVSim model files are provided in a compressed zip format due to the number and size of the files (7 GB uncompressed). The contents of the zip file include the model executables, model input files, and selected outputs from running the model and calculating zbudgets. The input files and parameter files are all in text format. Outputs are in text files and summaries have been developed and are contained in Excel files.
For a description of the model files and how to run the model, see SVSim Version 1.0: Roadmap to Running SVSim.

The beta version of the Sacramento Valley Groundwater-Surface Water Simulation Model (SVSim Beta) is a computer program that simulates water movement through the linked land surface, groundwater, and surface water flow systems in California’s Sacramento Valley using the DWR-developed software, Integrated Water Flow Model Version 2015 (IWFM-2015). DWR is providing SVSim Beta to Groundwater Sustainable Agencies (GSAs) and other related entities as a provisional tool that may be used during development of their Groundwater Sustainability Plans (GSPs). The SVSim Beta model has undergone limited calibration of the land surface budgets and aquifer parameters. A calibrated version of SVSim, including complete documentation, is anticipated in Winter 2020/2021. SVSim Beta has a finite element grid with over 23,000 elements. Model input data have been specified on a per element basis based on available information. The model elements are also grouped into nine (9) water budget subregions for estimating regional water budgets. SVSim Beta contains monthly historical stream inflows, surface water diversions, precipitation, evapotranspiration, and land use acreages from October 1973 through September 2015 (Data is available for 1922 through 2015 for some input files). SVSim Beta dynamically calculates crop water demands, allocates contributions from precipitation, soil moisture and surface water diversions, and calculates the groundwater pumping required to meet the remaining demand. It simulates the historical response of the Sacramento Valley’s groundwater and surface water flow system to historical stresses and can also be used to simulate the response to projected stresses. The model has a typical run-time of approximately 3 hours.
The SVSim Beta Model is provided in a compressed zip format due to its size (0.7 GB uncompressed). The contents of the zip file include the model executables, model input files, and selected outputs from running the model and calculating zbudgets. The input files and parameter files are all in text files. Outputs are in text files and summaries have been developed and are contained in excel files.
Within the zip file, there are seven (7) folders. The folder titled Bin contains the executables. The folder titled Budget contains a batch file and input file for creating budgets after the simulation has been completed. The folder titled Excel contains excel summaries of outputs of the Budgets and ZBudgets. The folder titled Preprocessor contains the geometry information for the model nodes, elements, streams, and layers. The folder titled Results contains the outputs from the model simulation, budgets, and Zbudgets. The folder titled Simulation contains all the data for initial and boundary conditions as well as aquifer parameters. In addition, Simulation settings and features as well as the batch files for simulating the model are provided here. The folder titled Z-Budget contains the input files and batch files for running the ZBudgets using the model simulation results.
