Description
###StroumMonitor helps to consume electricity better.
A real electricity weather, StroumMonitor qualifies the national level of electricity supply in Luxembourg. Clear signals from the network operator Creos Luxembourg S.A. guide consumers in taking the right steps and ensuring a secure supply of electricity for all.
The StroumMonitor alerts the population in the event of a shortage of electricity (or orange or red signal, depending on the criticality of the situation). In addition, it also indicates the daily peak hours of consumption (with white bars).
Where does the StroumMonitor signal come from?
Like weather forecasts, the signal is a forecast of network operators in Europe that provides information on the energy supply situation for each hour of a certain day. The main objective is to detect potential imbalances between electricity supply and demand, based on hourly forecasts for the coming days.
A first forecast of the situation is available three days in advance. It is continuously improved until the very moment (‘real-time’) on the basis of new information from consumers, suppliers and generators of electricity. System operators shall compile all such information taking into account the activity in the European markets and the availability of the electricity grid. The process is part of the tasks of the system operator assigned by Regulation (EU) 2019/941 on risk preparedness in the electricity sector. An illustrative explanation of the process can be found here.
The green signal corresponds to the default signal of the StroumMonitor device. It means that the situation is without particular risk, with a good balance between consumption and production and a sufficient margin of reserves.
The application of the orange signal results from the forecast of a tense electrical system and a very small margin of reserves.
By remaining in the same logic, the red signal is activated when there is not enough electricity to cover all needs.
Peak hours (white bars) show the slots in which the import volume of electricity from Germany is at the highest level. This volume is determined by deducting national electricity production in Luxembourg from national consumption. This condition is activated daily for the highest four hours of import. In Luxembourg, the typical periods of peaks are hours between 11-13h and between 17-19h on working days. In order to consider the specific daily profiles of consumption and production (such as the availability of photovoltaics for example), a precise forecast is made at 4 p.m. the day before the same day to update the white bars of the StroumMonitor.
It remains to be noted that even if the best available forecasts are used, there may still be gaps and unforeseen in the power supply chain.
