Description
The main objective of Section III of the National Atlas of Spain (ANE) is to provide a temporal context through maps and texts on geographic content. It is subdivided according to traditional historical periods, chosen for their relevance in presenting specific aspects of Spain's history and development. The Prehistory subtheme focuses on archaeological sites in the Iberian Peninsula to illustrate the sources contributing to our understanding of this era. The periods of Antiquity and the Middle Ages are addressed with emphasis on territorial structure, settlement patterns, and historical events such as Roman villas, Christian reconquests, and Islamic territorial divisions. The Modern Age continues this thematic consistency by highlighting events like the dynastic union of Aragon and Castile in the 15th century, the Treaty of Tordesillas, and cultural references from the 18th century. The Contemporary Age introduces a more precise periodization and includes maps detailing political repression during the Franco dictatorship and demographic movements linked to energy, agricultural, and industrial planning.
