Evolution of the rates of change in the average width of the beaches of the Valencian Community in the period 1984 - 2024 (GVA-ThinkInAzul)
Description
Cartography that represents the rate of change (evolution of average annual width) calculated for the Valencian coast during the period between the years 1984-2024 based on the analysis of some 1300 satellite images from the Landsat series (5, 7, 8 and 9) and Sentinel-2, of the shoreline from Vinaròs to Pilar de la Horadada. A total of 460 kilometers of which about 240 kilometers have been considered as beaches to be monitored in 5 study periods between 1984-2024: a) 1984-1994; b) 1995-2004; c) 2005-2014; d) 2015-2024 and e) the entire complete period: 1984-2024
These are more than 23800 profiles arranged perpendicular to the coast and along all the Valencian beaches, spaced every 10 meters that offer statistical data on the evolution of each stretch of beach in the last 40 years calculated from a reference line. This reference line always runs through the beginning of the beach inland (depending on the cases: interior part of the beach, promenades or foot of the dune), and has been divided into sections of 10 meters to sectorize the measurements and deduce different statistical parameters.
Each mapped profile corresponds to each of these 10-meter sectors associated with the reference line and includes the following statistical data: the maximum change recorded by the average annual shorelines (expressed in meters) and the average rate of change (expressed in m/year) calculated by the LRR (Linear Regression Rate) method for each of the different periods between 1984-2024.
The length of each profile corresponds to the maximum change that occurred within the period analyzed, therefore marking the position of how far the average positions of the coastlines reached further towards the sea (maximum average width) and further towards the land (minimum average width). The rate of change registered in each of these profiles is expressed through a range of colors. That rate can be positive (accumulation) or negative (erosion).
Note that this evolution has occurred based on different time scales and may have been caused by different agents. In some areas, erosion or accumulation evidence the sedimentary balance of the area (stable, erosive or cumulative), while on other occasions they evidence impacts of high-energy natural phenomena (such as large coastal storms), or those produced directly by direct or indirect human interventions.
Given the variable nature of the coast in the period analyzed, there are stretches that were not beaches in the past, but are in the present, or vice versa, or also infrastructures that existed but were later eliminated, leading to the creation or loss of new stretches of beaches. All of this can mean that, at times, there are stretches of coast for which there is no data for a given period, precisely because they were not considered beaches.
The mapped results come from the scientific developments carried out by the GeoEnvironmental Mapping and Remote Sensing research group of the Universitat Politècnica de València and have been obtained within the SIMONPLA project (Valencian Beach Monitoring System) which is a subproject within the Thinkinazul program of the Valencian Community, a program supported by the Ministry of Science and Innovation with European Union Next GenerationEU funds.
