Description
WMS service with the limits of the two Geoparks declared by UNESCO in the Canary Islands (limits provided by the Vice-Administration of the Environment of the Government of the Canary Islands):
— the Geopark of the island of El Hierro that has been declared World Geopark in September 2014.
— the Lanzarote Geopark and Chinijo Archipelago that has been declared World Geopark in September 2015
Both also belong to the European Geoparks network.
The figure of Geopark is a distinction granted by UNESCO to territories with a remarkable geological heritage, which is conveniently preserved and used as an engine for local development. Geoparks have become one of UNESCO’s main programs, along with others better known as World Heritage Sites or Biosphere Reserves. They emerged in the early 1990s in Europe, with France, Germany, Greece and Spain as founding partners. This protection figure is recognised by Law 42/2007 on the protection of the natural environment, article 50.
