Special Eurobarometer 259: The European Union and its neighbours

The External Relations Directorate-General of the European Commission commissioned a poll on EU citizens’ awareness of countries neighbouring the EU and their attitudes towards EU relations with these countries. Interviews were conducted face-to-face in people’s homes, in their national language, between May 5 and June 11, 2006.
In this analysis, knowledge of EU membership is first explored, then levels of awareness of countries neighbouring the EU and then the main issue: EU citizens attitudes towards the European Neighbourhood Policy, their assessment of the objectives and subjects of specific relations between the EU and its neighbours and their perception of the advantages and disadvantages of such relations.
For each theme addressed, this analysis looks at the:
• European Union as a whole;
• Individual countries;
• Socio-demographic variables.

The results by volumes are distributed as follows:

• Volume A: Countries
• Volume AA: Groups of countries
• Volume A' (AP): Trends
• Volume AA' (AAP): Trends of groups of countries
• Volume B: EU/socio-demographics
• Volume B' (BP) : Trends of EU/ socio-demographics
• Volume C: Country/socio-demographics
