Red list of bedbugs (Hemiptera, Heteroptera) of Austria.
Description
The present Red List of endangered bedbugs in Austria showed that of the 924 species of bedbugs, 248 species are endangered to varying degrees: 49 species are threatened with extinction, 60 species are highly endangered and 117 species are endangered. For 103 species an imminent threat is discernible and for 110 taxa the data is insufficient for classification. No evidence has been available for 22 species since 1990, in some cases despite targeted searches. These are classified as regionally extinct or lost. Highly endangered species mainly populate river banks, moorland, salt and sand sites as well as dry habitats. The main sources of risk are air pollutants, agriculture, forestry and water management. There is ‘strong responsibility’ for 26 types of bedbugs and Austria is ‘particularly responsible’ for the continued existence of populations worldwide for three sub-endemic types of bedbugs.
