## Regional Cancer Registries Network
To meet the needs of public health protection, the Sicilian Region has enhanced the main information tools necessary for epidemiological surveillance
In particular, the Sicilian regional network of cancer registries is to be considered a cutting-edge model in the national field and is structured on a territorial and regional basis as enshrined in Article 27 of Regional Law No 5 of 14 April 2009, which refers to the organisation of the Regional Network of Cancer registries whose functions of coordination, guidance and management of data at central level are entrusted to the Regional Epidemiological Observatory with extension to all Sicilian provinces.
The Territorial Cancer Registers are divided into regional basins as follows:
- Integrated Cancer Registry of the provinces of Catania, Messina Enna and Syracuse (at AUOP of Catania and ASP of Syracuse)
- Cancer Registry of the Province of Palermo (at AUOP of Palermo)
- Tumor Registry of Trapani and Agrigento (at ASP Trapani)
- Cancer Registry of Ragusa and Caltanissetta (at ASP Ragusa)
All Italian cancer registries must correspond to quality standards provided for under the accreditation of the Italian Association of Cancer Registries (AIRTUM) and the entire regional network is recognized by the same.
In addition, total regional coverage was reached in April 2018 with the inclusion of the last remaining province, Agrigento: in Sicily coverage is therefore 100% against 70% of the national average . All Sicilian municipalities are therefore covered by a register.
The data, verified and collected by the registers at territorial level, are therefore sent to the regional database in anonymous form at the epidemiological observatory which periodically updates the reporting in the form of a *health atlas accessible via the internet* to the institutional website where the trend of cancer diseases is described with territorial detail in tabular and cartographic form.
The progressive increase in cases with a previous diagnosis in the community , in terms of prevalence , is a widely anticipated event and does not correspond to a measure of risk but depends on the improvement of diagnostic techniques and the quality of care as well as on ongoing demographic changes.
We therefore recommend the use of * qualified operators with specific competence and training in public health, hygiene and preventive medicine or epidemiology and / or operating in the territorial bodies in charge (Departments of Prevention and / or Cancer Registries) to support the analysis and interpretation of data. *
