Tuscany Region — Ornamental Stones and Marbles (BD_PIOR)
Description
The database of ornamental stones of the Tuscany Region (BD_PIOR) allows to identify the outcrops of stone materials (marbles, granites, stones) highlighting the cultivated product varieties and their geological production formations, also shows the location of the active and inactive quarries and the quarry landfills that may be present. The geometry of the outcrops of the ornamental stones is based on the Geological DB on the scale 1:10.000 of the Tuscany Region, each ornamental stone appears in the legend with an abbreviation of two letters and with its own trade name such as: Pietra Serena, Giallo Siena, Rosso Collemandina, Marmo Cipollino; this allows it to be identified with sufficient clarity by the experts.The guide for the identification in the regional territory of the deposits being excavated in the present and in the past has been provided by the document of the Tuscany Region produced by the “P.R.A.E.R.” (Regional Plan for the Recovery of Excavated Areas and Reuse of Recoverable Areas, approved by Regional Council Decision No 27 of 27 February 2007), with particular reference to Annex B (“Sector II”, Ornamental Materials) and Annex F (Historical Materials).The territory of the Apuan Alps is not covered by the above-mentioned document, “Sector II”, Ornamental Materials) and Annex F (Historical Materials). This territory is of particular importance for the presence of historical materials cultivated in the past for ornamental use whose knowledge is of particular importance both in the placement of Tuscan stones in construction and art, and for the monumental restoration.Main information levels of the geographical database created: Quarries (Cave.shp), Jacimenti (Giacimenti.shp), Ornamental Stones (Ornamental Stones.shp), Ravaneti (Ravaneti.shp), Resources (Resources.shp). In addition, 70 layouts in pdf format selected by BD_PIOR have been created and made available for the areas of greatest interest.
