Low enthalpy geothermal potential in Piedmont

Description

The proposal for a Regional Environmental Energy Plan (PEAR), adopted by Regional Executive Decree No 18-478 of 8 November 2019, aims to orient regional policies towards those of the Climate Energy package and to support the industrial and research chain of the energy field.A significant part of the Plan concerns knowledge of the potential of the regional territory regarding the use of renewable energy sources in order to understand how and to what extent each source can contribute to the achievement of the objectives set by the Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC) for production from renewable energy sources in 2030.The particular, the PNIEC provides for the achievement of an annual thermal production of 400 ktoe by heat pumps, with an increase of 135% compared to 2015.The Sustainable Energy Development Sector (Environment, Energy and Territory Directorate) has instructed the Politecnico di Torino to develop a quantitative forecasting tool that allows to estimate how much of this objective can be met by exploiting the geothermal source, for the air conditioning of buildings, both winter and summer. This tool consists of three main parts: 1) Assessment and mapping of the closed-loop geothermal potential available on the regional territory; 2) Execution of economic assessments on the convenience (cost-benefit balance, direct and indirect) to install and operate geothermal systems with respect to the installation of more traditional air conditioning systems powered by diesel, LPG, pellets, firewood and natural gas; 3) Development of geothermal development scenarios.Attached to this metadata are the illustrative report of the Polytechnic of Turin and the datasets produced:- Map of the estimated thermal conductivity- Map of the estimated thermal capacity- Map of the estimated land undisturbed temperature (T0)- Map of the closed-loop geothermal potential (QBHE)
