Description
The Ramsar Convention, officially the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance, is an act signed in Ramsar, Iran, on 2 February 1971 by a group of governments, scientific institutions and international organisations participating in the International Conference on Wetlands and Waterfowl Research Bureau, sponsored by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the International Council for the Protection of Birds (ICBP). For the purposes of that Convention, wetlands are wetlands and marshes, peatlands or reservoirs, natural or artificial, permanent or temporary, with standing or running water, fresh, brackish, or salted, including expanses of sea water, the depth of which, at low tide, does not exceed six metres. For the purposes of this Convention, aquatic birds are birds ecologically dependent on wetlands.
