Hospitalization for femoral neck fracture in elderly patients

Description

Fractures of the femoral neck are particularly frequent traumatic events in old age; are divided into medial or intracapsular (subcapitate and mediocervical with risk of aseptic necrosis of the head) and lateral or extracapsular (basicervical, pertrochanteric and subtroncanteric). In most cases they are caused by chronic bone diseases (e.g. senile osteoporosis) and occur due to low-energy traumas (accidental falls in the home environment), mainly in women who very often associate internal and motor coordination diseases with the condition of severe osteoporosis. International guidelines agree that the best treatment for femoral neck fractures is surgical. the surgical strategy depends on the type of fracture and the age of the patient; the indicated interventions are fracture reduction and prosthetic replacement. Several studies have shown that long waits for surgery correspond to an increased risk of mortality and disability of the patient, therefore, the general recommendations are that the patient with femoral neck fracture be operated within 24 hours of entering the hospital.
