Ecological Status Rivers 2015-2020 [ARPA Lazio]

Description

The European Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EC provides a criterion for assessing the quality status of watercourses based mainly on the analysis of the aquatic ecosystem and on the study of the composition and abundance of the plant and animal communities that constitute it (benthic diatoms and macrophytes, benthic macroinvertebrates and fish). Living organisms are therefore privileged, since they are the most valid indicators of the state of health of a water body, able to respond to stimuli coming from the abiotic and biotic components and to modify their communities in response to environmental alterations. Biological elements, therefore, become priority for the determination of the ecological status of water bodies, supported by the analysis of chemical-physical (LIMeco), chemical and hydromorphological elements. The monitoring system is in fact based on the sampling and analysis of a complex and articulated set of type parameters: Organic: identification of the status of the reference biological communities; Physico-chemical: identifications of the state determined by the presence of organic load and of the conditions of trophy; chemical: identification of toxic pollution conditions. The Ecological Status of the water body is therefore determined by the evaluation of a series of indicators representative of the different conditions of the ecosystem and is classified according to the lowest class of the aforementioned indicators according to the schemes provided for by Ministerial Decree 260/2010; there are five quality classes: "High", "Good", "Sufficient", "Poor" and "Bad".
