Description
The chemical status of all surface water bodies is determined by the presence of the substances listed in Directive 2008/105/EC, updated by Directive 2013/39/EU, implemented in Italy by Legislative Decree No 172 of 13 October 2015. (heavy metals, pesticides, industrial pollutants, endocrine disruptors, etc.). These substances are classified according to their hazard into three categories: priority, priority hazardous and other pollutants. For each of them, separate environmental quality standards (EQS) are set for the different matrices analyzed (water, sediment, biota). Exceeding the EQS set for each of these substances determines the assignment of "not good" chemical status to the water body. The European Water Framework Directive, 2000/60/EC, requires member states, as an environmental objective for surface waters, to achieve "good ecological status and good chemical status".
