Description

The Puerto Rico U.S. EEZ study area includes the seafloor between the island of Puerto Rico and the Puerto Rico Trench floor and extends west to Mona Canyon and east to the U.S. Virgin Islands. South of the islands, it covers parts of the Muertos Trough and the Venezuelan Basin. South of the islands, it covers parts of the Muertos Trough and the Venezuelan Basin. As in earlier EEZ reconnaissance surveys, the USGS utilized the GLORIA (Geological LOng-Range Inclined Asdic) sidescan-sonar system to complete the geologic mapping. The collected GLORIA data were processed and digitally mosaicked to produce continuous imagery of the seafloor. A total of 9 digital mosaics of approximately a 2 degree by 2 degree (or smaller) area with a 50-meter pixel resolution were completed for the Puerto Rico U.S. EEZ.
