Description

[POLLnet](http://www.pollnet.it "Italian Aerobiological Monitoring Network") is the Italian aerobiological monitoring network of the [National System for the Protection of the Environment (SNPA)](http://www.isprambiente.gov.it/it/national-system-protection-environment "National System for the Protection of the Environment (SNPA)") formed by the Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA) and the Regional Agencies and the Autonomous Provinces of Trento and Bolzano for the Protection of the Environment (ARPA; APPA). It deals with the monitoring and study of the **biological component of airborne particulate matter present in the atmosphere** with particular attention to **pollen** and **fungal spores**. The data collected are suitable in the **environmental field** to integrate air quality monitoring, the estimation of plant species biodiversity, the study of climate change and in the **health field** to produce extremely useful information in diagnostics, therapy, research and prevention of respiratory allergic diseases. Further uses are also envisaged in the agronomic field and in the protection of artistic assets (e.g. in libraries, archives, museums). POLLnet is part of the National Environmental Information System (SINAnet) and its activity is regulated by the guidelines: [POLLnet – Aerobiological Monitoring Guidelines](http://www.isprambiente.gov.it/publications/manuals-and-guidelines/pollnet-guidelines-for-aerobiological-monitoring “POLLnet – Aerobiological Monitoring Guidelines”). The analyses provide *daily average concentrations* expressed in *pollen or fungal spores per cubic metre of air*.
