External debt statistics of the Estonian economic sectors
Description
The basis for compiling external debt statistics is foreign claims and liabilities recognised in the international investment position, which are debts by nature, i.e. are accompanied by a repayment obligation.
Debt claims and liabilities between companies in direct investment relationships shall be included in the external debt. The debt accounting does not include direct, portfolio and other investments in share capital, reinvestment of income, derivatives or gold reserves belonging to the reserves of the central bank.
Of the indicators characterising external debt, the following are more important:
- total external debt (gross external debt), which sums the external debt nature of all institutional sectors of the country;
- net external debt, which is the difference between external liabilities and claims of all institutional sectors of the country which are repayable, i.e. external liabilities and claims of a debt nature.
Indicators reflecting external debt are compiled at the end of the period.
