The indicator measures the total artificial area with its subunits of i) total built-up area and ii) total artificial non built-up area as a share of the total surface area of land in the country. Built-up areas are areas covered with buildings and greenhouses whereas artificial non built-up areas include streets and sealed surfaces. The data refers to the land use/cover area survey (LUCAS). Data are available for years 2009 and 2012. For 2009, the EU aggregate provided regards only 23 countries (BG, CY, MT, RO are missing). The LUCAS survey is conducted every three years. Comparability over time should be treated with caution due to the changes in the total coverage, the amendments introduced in the classification for the 2012 survey and the time that has elapsed since the first phase sample was stratified.
