Description
Due to numerous water-building interventions, the March has lost the character of a meandering lowland river over long distances; the adjacent ecosystems began to land. In cooperation with Slovakia, a pilot project was carried out in the section between dwarf village and Marchegg with the aim of improving bank structuring, increasing connectivity with the surrounding area and preparing the connection to meanders separated from the river. It turns out that the redesigned habitats are re-accepted by most animal and plant species. The ecological status of March and the connection to the groundwater have also improved significantly. The results contribute to the improvement of policy planning for pannonian rivers and provide the basis for the implementation of the EU Water Framework Directive.
