Corine Land Cover year 2000 — Level IV

Description

The CORINE programme (COoRdination de l’Information sur l’Environnement), which was launched by the Council of the European Communities in 1985, is intended to dynamically monitor the state of the environment in the Community area, with a view to guiding common policies, monitoring their effects and proposing possible corrective measures. Within the CORINE programme, the CORINE-Land Cover project is specifically intended for the detection and monitoring, at a scale compatible with Community needs, of the characteristics of the territory, with particular attention to the protection requirements. The information is comparable and homogenous for all the countries participating in the project (currently 31 countries including some of North Africa).The data were derived through the photo-interpretation of satellite images (Landsat 5 and 7). The 44 land cover classes are divided into 3 three levels (5 classes for the first level, 15 for the second level and 44 for the third level). The first realisation was carried out from the 1980s and led to the realisation of the CLC 90. Since this edition, with regard to the Italian territory, the Ministry of the Environment has decided to extend the legend to the fourth level for wooded surfaces and other semi-natural environments using LandsatTM data for 1998 and the operational specifications derived from the project “Completion of basic naturalistic knowledge” (ConSCN250MATTLANDASAT TM5 1995-1998).
