Aerial image modelling of the current forest vegetation for the Natura 2000 area of Ennstal Alps National Park Gesäuse (Northern Limestone Alps, Styria)

Based on geomorphological data, CIR aerial image analysis and
262 localised forest vegetation recordings became a map of the current
Forest vegetation for the Natura 2000 site Ennstaler Alpen & Gesäuse National Park modeled in GIS.
Orientation to the forest site survey for the Gesäuse
Location types and elevation limits (Carli 2008) allowed the preparation of 22 different
Forest types that were checked on site on a random basis in 2009 and adjusted if necessary. In the
Text we explain the starting position, outline the considerations in the map creation and present the forest types used as well as their spatial distribution. Finally, the limits of such non-terrestrial vegetation mapping are being discussed.
