Ecological balance of the winter service of the city of Salzburg.
Description
The length of the roads, walkways and cycle paths in Salzburg’s urban area is around 650 km. Over the past decade, an average of around 1.000 tonnes of salt, 2.700 tonnes of splint and 187.600 l brine per year have been used to support this network. In order to assess the impact of the winter service on the environment, Stadt und Land Salzburg commissioned the Federal Environment Agency in 2021. The results of this study serve as a basis for decision-making for an ecologically compatible design of the winter service in the state capital Salzburg. The study examined the impact of winter service on the environmental media air, soil and water, as well as the effects on vegetation. Data was provided by the city and state of Salzburg and supplemented by a literature search.
