Description
In 2019, around 79.8 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent were emitted in Austria. As a result, emissions were around 1.8% higher than in 1990. Compared to 2018, greenhouse gas emissions increased by 1.5%. The main reasons for this were the higher steel production, the higher electricity production in natural gas power plants and the weather-related higher use of fossil fuels in the building sector.
The non-ETS sectors emitted 50.2 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent in 2019, 1.9 million tonnes higher than the 2019 emission ceiling.
Compliance with the national 2020 target is nevertheless likely, as unused emission allowances are available from previous years and emissions are expected to fall significantly in 2020 due to the pandemic.
