Copernicus Forest Italy — Dataset

Description

High Resolution Layer — Forest are datasets produced under the Pan-European component of Copernicus (CLMS) land cover monitoring and land use services. They consist of the 2012 and 2015 time series and were produced using high resolution multitemporal and multispectral satellite data, in particular Sentinel-2A (ESA) and Landsat 8 (USGS). Forest datasets consist of two different products: Dominant Leaf Type (DLT) and Tree Cover Density (TCD) both represent the ‘status layer’. The Tree Cover Density product is defined as ‘vertical projection of tree crowns on the Earth’s surface’ and provides information on the amount of crown cover within the pixel expressed in percentage values from 0 to 100. The Dominant Leaf Type product provides information on the type of dominant vegetation, broadleaves or coniferous, and covers the same spatial extension as the Tree Cover Density. Both products have a spatial resolution of 20 meters, have no minimum cartographic unit (MMU) but have a minimum amplitude (MMW) of 20 meters and are based on pixels. Both are also available in the aggregated version at 100 meters of resolution. The frequency of data update is 3 years. The production of HRL Forests has been coordinated by the European Environment Agency within the European Copernicus programme involving the National Reference Centres on Land Cover of the Eionet network (for Italy, represented by ISPRA).
