Artificial underground cavities – Dataset

Description

The National Geodatabase of Artificial Cavities is the result of the activities carried out under an agreement between ISPRA and the Italian SSI-Società Speleologica (DG/2919 of 17/11/2020) aimed at the creation of a single and shared archive of artificial cavities present in the subsoil of the Italian territory. The dataset collects location, data and documentation (planimetries, sections, survey reports) relating to the artificial cavities census. The collection and availability of information related to the stability conditions of artificial cavities is in turn an essential element in the implementation of studies of hazards from failure of underground cavities and the definition of strategies for mitigating the associated risk.The National Geodatabase of Artificial Cavities is updated through the acquisition of new data.Each cavity is identified by a progressive number and is described through a sheet comprising the following fields: archive information; geographical information; cavity characteristics and speleometric data; geological-technical information on the excavation rock; attached documentation and bibliographic references.The archive information refers to other possible identification codes/denominations. Geographical information is relevant to the location of the cavity, and may refer to access, central or other representative point.The geographical coordinates reported are “conventional coordinates”, i.e. they contain an equal margin of inaccuracy for all, in order to protect public and private law in compliance with the legal system and to protect safety, not allowing access to persons without the right to access. The geological-technical information describes the type of excavation material (rock/earth rock), geomechanical characteristics and indications of instability (fractures, collapses, waterfalls), cavity size. The geographical information is pertinent to the location of the cavity, and can be referred to the access, the centroid or other representative point.The geographical coordinates shown are “conventional coordinates”, i.e. they contain an equal margin of inaccuracy for all, to protect public and private law in compliance with the juridical rules and to protect safety, not allowing access to people without the right to access.By “characteristics of the cavity and speleometric data” we mean the description of the type of cavity, age of construction, use, access mode, possible existence of constraints. The geological-technical information describes the type of excavated material (rock/soft rock/soil), geomechanical characteristics and evidences of instability (fractures, collapses, water ingress), cavity dimensions. When available, it is possible to access cartographic data (plans and sections), photographic and bibliographic documentation.
