Coast Line 2020 v2.0 – Dataset

Description

The project to define the Italian coastal structure was born with the first digitisation and characterisation of the coastal elements (shore line, back beach, beaches), which took place in 2005 and aimed at the study of the state of the Italian coasts and their evolution. The characterisation of the coast line was carried out by means of photo-interpretation and video digitisation from the database consisting of the IT2000 color orthophotos, realised in the two-year period 1998/1999. This first activity produced the most recent and uniform representation on a national scale 1:25.000 of the morphological structure of the Italian coast and allowed the localisation and classification of defence works implemented in recent decades for the protection of coasts from erosive phenomena and natural hazards. The orthophoto line was subsequently superimposed and compared with the coast line extracted from the reference historical IGM cartography at 1:25.000 scale. This second activity allowed, through appropriate elaborations, the analysis extended over a period of about 40-50 years of changes in the shoreline and the identification and classification of the territorial areas in progress and backwards. The 2000 coverage was first updated in 2010 on the orthophotos of flight IT2006, referring to the period 2004-06, using the same standard used for the LC2000. The update of the LC20V2.0, with the digitisation and characterisation of the coast line, the beach line and the beaches that emerged, was carried out starting from the images published by Google Maps, referring almost entirely to the years 2017-2020. In version 2.0 of the cover, spatial analysis has been integrated with the evolution of coastal morphodynamics compared to previous covers. These are calculations obtained following the corrections indicated in the image co-registration analysis between 2006 and 2020.In addition to these integrations, part of the GeoDB has been updated, both for the Costa Line layer and for the Rearbeam Line, now being more adherent to the operating standard in force.
