Description

The organisation and award of the International Standard Identifier for Libraries and Related Organisations (ISIL) to archive institutions has been delegated by the Royal Library to the National Archives. The ISIL assigns a unique number to any library or related organisation in the world and is an ISO standard (ISO/DIS 15511). Due to the increasing standardisation, the application of the ISIL has also become usable within the archival system. Within the EAD standard, the ISIL offers possibilities to refer unambiguously to the origin of a piece. The major advantage of this standardisation is that it can connect with future joint data and infrastructures, enabling more links within archives as well as between archives, libraries and heritage institutions, thereby increasing the digital visibility and findability of information.
