Description
Four out of five species in Austria are insects. Among other things, they provide pollination, pest control, the degradation of organic substances and provide food for other animal species. The report provides an overview of species numbers, distribution and stock trends in Austria as well as their importance for us humans. One focus is on the dramatic declines in insect populations worldwide and various hazard factors. In the past, only demanding, specialised insect species were considered endangered, new evidence suggests that frequent and widespread species are also affected by a decline. There is a high demand for research on the causes of danger, but sufficient information is available to implement measures to protect insect diversity.
