Description
136 single trees and 56 larger tree groups spread across the city have gained the status of iconic trees.
The iconic trees have been designated as part of the City of Copenhagen’s tree policy to mark the trees that mean something special historically and for the local area.
The iconic trees have been identified on the basis of seven criteria, with particular emphasis on the age of the tree and the local affiliation. All trees are located on municipal areas — i.e. public streets, squares, parks and natural areas as well as sports areas, schools and institutions — and are thus trees at the disposal of the Technical and Environmental Administration and the Economic Administration respectively.
A tree must meet at least 4 out of 7 criteria:
* The tree must be a fully grown tree
* There must be a special local connection to the tree
* The wood must have a special architectural/spatial value
* The tree has a special biological value
* The wood has a particularly active importance for the local microclimate
* The tree provides special sensuous experiences
The tree has a special historical significance.
