Description

La Palma Island is the emerging part of an oceanic volcanic building of predominantly basaltic composition. Its underwater base rests on the Atlantic abyssal plain, about 4,000 m deep. Its surface area is 706 km2. The highest elevations above 2,000 m of altitude are: Roque de los Muchachos (2,426 m), Fuente Nueva (2,366 m), Pico de la Cruz (2,351 m), Piedra Llana (2,321 m), Pico Palmero (2,310 m), Tamagantera (2,299 m), Pico de las Nieves (2,247 m), Pico del Cedro (2,091 m) and Corralejo (2,044 m) It is characterized by the relative uniformity of the geological materials that make it up, without prejudice to the different ages and diversity derived from the resulting weathering and relief modelling processes.
