Description

**Zoning of the La Palma World Biosphere Reserve.**(Update date:2014) In 1983 UNESCO declared in La Palma, in the municipality of San Andrés y Sauces, 511 hectares of the estate "El Canal y Los Tiles" as a biosphere reserve, being the first island in Spain to have this important international recognition. Despite being the smallest reserve of the Spanish biosphere, it housed a very interesting sample of laurisilva, relict forest of the Tertiary Era, more than 1.6 million years ago. In 1998, the declared territory was expanded, integrating the northeast arc of the island, becoming more than 16% of the island's surface, incorporating the municipalities of Barlovento, Puntallana, San Andrés and Sauces and, partially, Santa Cruz de La Palma. On November 6, 2002, at the Plenary Session of the International Coordinating Council of UNESCO, the entire island territory was declared a La Palma World Biosphere Reserve. Finally, the International Council approves a new extension in the marine part, on June 12, 2004, which means a functional zoning of the island building and the deepening of the adaptive management model developed. The inclusion of the entire island in the Biosphere Reserve allowed to incorporate spaces of undoubted environmental quality, such as the National Park of La Caldera de Taburiente, but also to extend the principles of sustainability both to those urban or rural areas that have endured a greater transformation and to the marine environment. The constitution of the governing and administrative body of the Biosphere Reserve, the Insular Consortium of the La Palma World Biosphere Reserve, with the rank of Public Local Administration, clearly implies a greater involvement of the island and municipal powers, a broader participation of the private sector and social groups, as well as the assumption of new perspectives and responsibilities, which encourage the achievement of sustainability and conservation objectives.
