Chestnut canker reports

Description

Chestnut canker is caused by the fungus Cryphonectria parasitica, native to Asia. The disease mainly affects the chestnut tree, and more rarely the oak. After its introduction in the United States, the disease almost brought the American chestnut (Castanea dentata) to extinction. The first detection on European soil was carried out in Italy in 1938. The fungus is present today in many European countries and the disease was detected in Belgium in 2014. Although less sensitive, the European chestnut (Castanea sativa) remains threatened. Monitoring is carried out by the team of the Walloon Observatory of Forest Health to understand the evolution of this disease and assess the future of the stands.
