GSM-R - Base stations on the network

Description

Quarterly evolution of the number of GSM-R antennas in service on the Infrabel network. Like a regular mobile phone, GSM-R is a mobile communication tool, but only for rail. The "R" of GSM-R therefore means "rail". Thanks to GSM-R signals, a train driver can communicate with the switch station from which Infrabel controls train traffic. These stations are located close to the railways. Like ETCS, GSM-R increases safety on the rail network. ETCS stands for European Train Control System. It is an automatic safety system that continuously monitors the speed of a train.
