List and geographical position of level crossings

Description

This dataset contains the geographical position of the public level crossings in operation on the passenger rail lines of the Infrabel rail network. Grade crossings are places where railways and public roads intersect. Here is a brief explanation of the level crossings available in this dataset: Level crossings on the Infrabel rail network: not all level crossings belong to the Infrabel railway network. Level crossings on tourist lines, some intersections in port areas, ... are managed by other actors. Public level crossings: these level crossings are located on public roads. They do not include grade crossings that can only be used by certain authorized persons. When cars, cyclists and pedestrians have to cross the tracks, there is always a risk of an accident, because a train cannot simply stop. The best way to prevent accidents at grade crossings is to eliminate road and rail crossings. This is why Infrabel wants to replace as many level crossings as possible with a bridge, tunnel, parallel road or cycle path. For more information on safety at level crossings, please visit the Infrabel website. Note: this dataset does not include temporary closures of level crossings. In addition, this list is updated quarterly. Infrabel removes level crossings every year, so it is possible that some of the level crossings on this list have been removed in the meantime. Good to know: there are different types of signage for level crossings; they are included in the database. Passage at level with passive signalling: there is a cross of Saint-André at the crossing but no light signals or barriers to announce the approach of a train. Level crossing with active signage: Light signals warn road users when approaching a train. Level crossing with partial closure: system with barriers on either side of the railways partially closing the public road. Level crossing with full closure: system with barriers on either side of the railways completely closing the public road.
