Historical Inventory of Former Industrial Sites and Service Activities (BASIAS)
Description
France was one of the first European countries to conduct inventories of sites polluted or likely to be polluted in a systematic manner (first inventory in 1978). The main objectives of these inventories are:
- to identify, in a broad and systematic manner, all abandoned or unabandoned industrial sites likely to cause environmental pollution;
- to preserve the memory of these sites;
- provide useful information to those involved in urban planning, land use and environmental protection.
The creation of regional historical inventories (IHR) of industrial sites and service activities, both active and non-active, was accompanied by the creation of the national BASIAS database.
Inventories are carried out at the departmental level and at the precision of 1/25 000 maps, which vary according to the quality of the sometimes very old archival plans. They can be supplemented by historical urban inventories (IHU) carried out by certain Municipalities and Agglomerations on the scale of the cadastral parcel and with a better completeness.
