The departmental elections (ex-cantonal) designate the members of the departmental council (ex-general) within the framework of the canton.
It is with Law No. 2013-403 of May 17, 2013 on the election of departmental councillors, municipal councillors and community councillors, that the assembly that heads the department takes the name of Departmental Council (replacing the previous name of General Council). The method of electing departmental councillors (ex-general councillors) is also modified.
At the departmental elections in March 2015, the new voting system was applied for the first time: two departmental councillors are elected in each canton by two-round binomial ballot. Candidates must present themselves in pairs composed of a woman and a man.
To avoid an excessive concentration of elections in the first half of 2027, departmental councillors as well as regional councillors elected in June 2021 were elected for a term of 6 years and 9 months. The next departmental elections will take place in March 2028.
