Agile frog population (Rana dalmatina) in the lagoon complex of Altube (Araba) - Euskadi Nature Information System

The presence of the agile frog in Altube was documented in the 50s of the last century, along with citations in the Alava towns of Iruraiz, Zurbano and Gopegi (Basque Government, 2002). The Atlas of the Continental Vertebrates of Alava, Vizcaya and Guipúzcoa confirms its presence in the ponds of Altube (Basque Government, 1985). In 2001, within the framework of the drafting of various draft species management plans catalogued in the Basque Country, the Altube ponds where their presence is valued as frequent were prospected again (Basque Government, 2002. Ekos Environmental Studies). According to studies carried out by the Aranzadi Science Society and the University of the Basque Country using genetic markers, the Altube population of Rana dalmatina is related to that of Sakana and Llanada Alavesa (Sarasola, V. et al. 2009), thus constituting a management unit. In 2006 we began the prospection, studies and monitoring of the populations of agile frogs detected in Upper Nervión in the winter of 2005. In 2007 we did a first survey of the Altube ponds, (Corral et al., 2009), a second sampling in 2010 and a third sampling this year 2012.
